“Souvenir Effect” DHUB Sessions
SCENE Conference
19.11.2009 - 09.12.2009Cycle of lectures and round table discussions to expand on reflections prompted by the souvenir theme from different angles and in different spheres and contexts.
Running parallel to the exhibition “Souvenir Effect. Travel Fetishes. Beyond Clichés”, DHUB is planning a cycle of lectures and round table discussions to expand on reflections prompted by the souvenir theme from different angles and in different spheres and contexts.
Participants in this cycle, to be held over four days at DHUB in November and December, will include prominent guest speakers from the world of design and photography and the business sector.
“Souvenir Effect. Travel Fetishes. Beyond Clichés” winds up the programme, “Tourism. Fiction Spaces”, which premiered last December with the exhibition of the same name – both DHUB productions. The urge to travel, the tourist’s experience and memories of holidays and journeys have been analysed over an eight-month period within the framework of this programme.

Discovering Souvenir Territory
Possibly more than any other designer, Constantin Boym has researched the narrative of the souvenir from a contemporary, critical perspective. His lecture will be followed by a round table discussion featuring the young designers, Marc Morro and Guillem Ferran, who produced souvenirs from non-existent places for “The Imaginary Souvenir” section of the exhibition. Marc Morro will present an implement inspired by Metropolis, Fritz Lang’s urban dystopia, while Guillem Ferran will embark on a ladder game to souvenirise Gulliver’s Travels.

Militant Humour in the Contemporary Souvenir
A double lecture held in two studios, one in Paris and the other in Barcelona, exploring the formal, functional and narrative potential of the souvenir as viewed from an irreverent militancy of humour and irony.
Atypyk, in particular, stands out for its humour, as attested by a sort of manifesto published on its website which states, among other things, that “Atypyk sounds Greek but is actually a French brand”. Then there’s Emiliana Design, Ana Mir and Emili Padrós’ Catalan studio whose activity ranges from exhibition curating to designing objects or spaces.
